In dem vorliegenden Buch wird anschaulich auf der Grundlage umfangreicher Quellenüberlieferungen die gesamte Breite des Volksaufstandes geschildert. In Fallstudien rekonstruiert der Autor die Geschehnisse in sämtlichen Regionen der DDR. Es wird zudem eingehend die Vorgeschichte des Aufstands beschrieben und erklärt, warum es überhaupt zur 'gescheiterten Revolution' im Sommer 1953 kam. Ebenso werden die Folgen des 17. Juni behandelt, und es wird detailliert dargelegt, wie die Diktatur die Aufständischen nach dem 17. Juni standrechtlich verfolgte.
